How Not to Age...

Extract:
“...is that we are all victims of our own stereotypes about aging and health”

The way I see it is that we are all ‘victims’ of all our own ideas. All of them.
There are many studies to support this – placebos, and things like that.

We really, really do create our own reality – on every level. Every single level.

We think those stray thoughts of our are just that – stray thoughts, but in fact, every single one them is having an effect – on ourselves, and the universe.
Every single one!

Ever had this experience? You think something like:
“This thing is getting old. I wonder how long it will last.” Just after that it breaks.
Was that ‘intuition’ - or did your thought bring it about?

What if the whole planet was being ‘run’ on our thoughts!
Then change would be up to us – wouldn’t it?

That is one of the ‘reasons’ IML was created – to help to support us all to be more aware. And not take things too seriously...

From: Sandra Jenson

Hi dear Paul,

David and I just watched a good documentary on aging -- and one of the experiments was particularly interesting --  a group of elderly men lived for one week in an environment similar to when they were young, and they were left on their own without carers and so on, basically doing things as if they were 'youthful'.

They were told " not to reminisce about the past, but to actually act as if they had traveled back in time." the results were extraordinary, even after one week - eyesight and hearing improving, blood pressure, mobility and so on.

As I thought you would be interested, I did a google search and came up with this article about Ellen Langer, the scientist who did the study, seems she has a book out:

Just Say No to Aging?
http://www.newrealities.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=649&Itemid=1108

"A provocative new book from a Harvard psychologist suggests that changing how we think about our age and health can have dramatic physical benefits.

...Her theory, argued in her new book, "Counterclockwise," is that we are all victims of our own stereotypes about aging and health. We mindlessly accept negative cultural cues about disease and old age, and these cues shape our self-concepts and our behavior. If we can shake loose from the negative clichés that dominate our thinking about health, we can "mindfully" open ourselves to possibilities for more productive lives even into old age."
"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."  - Howard Thurman

Much love,

Sandra
Paul:

Live now, pay later."

When young, old age seems - ages away. Yet what we do when we are young has
definite consequences for when we are older.
But who cares at that age. The caring and regrets come later.

Studies are showing that even not getting enough sleep - as young as three
years(!) has health consequences. Drugs, smoking, drinking, over-eating,
eating meat and other unhealthy foods, and unprotected sex do not seem to be
too important when young, but so many studies are showing these practices
bring great pain, regret, and often, lingering death.

The thing is, we can have fun without ruining our later-life health - but at
that young age the only way that message can be got through - is by example.
*Is By Example.* We live such a contradictory lives.

Despite what medical science tells us, we can compensate for an over-
indulgent youth. The mind is a very powerful organ - and guilt poisons it.

So just let go of the past, and start life again - now.
Not only healthy food and exercise, but healthy actions, words, and
thoughts. Especially the thoughts.
