Just in my time, values have changed so much.

If we needed to talk to someone on the phone,
we sent them a letter by mail,
asking them to phone our local telephone box -
which was a few streets away, at a certain time.
They would then go to their local phone box,
which was several streets away, at the agreed time….
The process could take weeks.

Almost no one in my area owned a car.
My father had a motorbike and sidecar.
I rode pillion and my mother in the sidecar
with my brother on her lap.

Children’s toys - at Xmas and birthdays -
were usually made by the father.

School was at least an hours walk - in British weather.

If you were ill, no work, no pay, and no medical assistance.
If you wanted something, you worked for it.
And so on.


It is not that we now have, what was at that time, unbelievable,
but the expectation that we should be entitled to be looked after -
even if we do not contribute.
